Strength and Comfort

Words: 100
Character(s): Stephen and Jack

"I'm not giving him rum, Jack, it would weaken his blood, and he needs what strength he can muster now."

"For pity's sake, Stephen, I've never seen a boy so brave. He strength is not in question."

"I don't tell you how to steer the ship, and now I must ask you to respect my judgment here." Jack put his hand on Stephen's briefly, and they shared a glance.

"He . . . just . . . he means much to me. Please. If there's anything that must be done to make him comfortable . . . do not hesitate."

A Matched Set

Rating: G
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Blakeney

They all had names: "Bruiser", "Long Tom" (Pullings's particular favorite), and of course "English Death". All except the two lonely little stern-chasers larboard and starboard on the quarterdeck. Blakeney thought this unfair, and he cast about for appropriate names. "Aubrey" and "Maturin" seemed good to him, but perhaps his stalwart captain wouldn't like a lowly little stern-chaser named after him.

Blakeney took a spike with him one night watch to etch his mark under those little cannons, but when he got there it had been done already. One had already been christened "Calamy" and the other bore his own name.

Illness

Rating G
Word Count: 100
Characters: Blakeney and Calamy

The noises coming from the boy at the rail were unpleasant, and Calamy feared he would start making them also if he came too close. The Surprise was a stiff ship, and it meant her pitches were damn rough in a freshening breeze. Calamy sighed—a true friend would help, so he walked over and patted Blakeney's back awkwardly. Blakeney tried to smile at his friend, but his stomach heaved and he bent again and retched.

"Gently now, gently," said Calamy, "I told you, a hundred days into a voyage it takes a strong stomach to handle Killick's toasted cheese."

Pairings or characters involved: Stephen and Jack
Notes: this is what comes of feeling melancholy

"I feel I should experience it once, the pain of flogging, if I'm to pronounce a man's fitness for it. I've felt pain before, as well you know, but not that particular one. Why did the navy settle on that form of punishment?"

Jack did not say "pain is sometimes all they understand"; though Stephen felt he wanted to. "'Tis a tradition from time immemorial, Stephen, but gentlemen are not flogged," Jack answered. "Why must you always ask?"

Stephen sighed. Jack regarded "tradition" as an unassailable answer, and Stephen did not pursue the issue. Sometimes just asking punished Jack enough.
